Satisfy your soul, not the society

Writer: ChristinaChristina

Often society demands conformity from its members in exchange for all-embracing rules, security of values and a feeling of belonging to something big.

Many of us need this belonging to a society to find purpose in life. Why? Because that’s what society teaches us. That’s what our parents and grandparents had been told and what had served them well.

That’s the reason why they - with nothing but goodwill in their minds of course - suggest us living the norm, which sometimes means to satisfy society’s needs before our own. Or even worse: not even distinguishing between these requests nor realizing or reflecting what our souls really wants.

WE GET SO EASILY DISTRACTED FROM OUR REAL POTENTIAL.

Our real potential evokes when we get our focus clear on what we want in life. These questions might feel uncomfortable yet they are crucial to move on, out of the comfort zone. But exactly then, we find all the distraction we secretly athirst for.

  • We are watching TV or playing video games for hours.

  • We buy things, we don’t really need just to receive a feeling of wholeness.

  • We are constantly searching for something to worry about (money, kids, other peoples problems, other peoples thoughts, environmental catastrophes, and the list goes on...)

A first step to more mindfulness is to become aware of those things.

So how can we do that?

✨ To satisfy your own needs, first of all you have to find out what your needs are, for example by writing down your life goals and their „why“. And a „because society expects it from me“ is definitely not considered to be a proper answer.

✨ When you know what you really aspire, take small steps, to your wellbeing. Start to embody this empowered and self-determined version of you. That may be half a hour of time for yourself per day, that is not structured, when you can do what ever comes to your mind in this moment. Feel like riding a bike? Do it. Feel like relaxing in the sun or reading a good book? Go for it. Want to dedicate this time to yoga or finally learning Italian? Here we are!

And here it comes, the well known thought:

“And what if others, or even “the society” don’t like what I am doing?”

Remember this: You don’t need anyone’s affection or approval in order to be good enough. When someone abandons, criticizes or rejects you, it isn’t actually about you or your personality. It’s about them and their insecurities, limitations and needs and you don’t have to internalize these.

Your worth isn’t contingent upon other people’s acceptance - it’s something inherent. You exist, and therefore, you matter.

✨ So we are allowed to voice our thoughts and feelings.

✨We are allowed to assert our needs and take up space.

✨ We are allowed to hold on to the truth that who we are is exactly enough.

✨ And we’re allowed to remove anyone from our lives who makes us feel otherwise.

Feeling enough is key to self-efficacy that’s main component of a happy life.
